NTN Meeting: A Beginners Guide Course

NTN Meeting: A Beginners Guide Course

Last week saw the inaugural NTN Meeting: A Beginners Guide Course take place of which Wetlab Ltd was a proud sponsor. It was a first for Cardiothoracic Surgery in the UK. Its aims are to allow tomorrow’s generation of consultants to really hit the ground running with their training. It was a three day wetlab based training course in which the recent national training number appointment trainees attended. The aim of the course was to educate on the fundamentals of the common surgical techniques.

This course is a new venture for the UK but a similar idea has been running for the past three years in the USA. In a similar way they have taken their junior residents and taught them the fundamental principles of cardiothoracic surgery.

The course was delivered by a faculty of highly regarded Consultant Surgeons from around the UK. Tim Graham, Chris Munch, John Pilling, Steve Livesey, Steve Hunter, Peter O’Keefe, Ian Wilson and Alan Kirk amongst others attended.

Over the course of three days deleagtes got a brief overview and unique opportunity to get hands on experience with the following subjects: Knot Tying, Proximal and Distal anastamosis, Rigid Bronchoscopy, ICD Insertion and Management, Tracheostomy and mini tracheostomy, CPM Emergencies, Aortic Valve Implantation, Suturing and stapling, VATS Port Insertion and IABP Sessions.

The course has had fantastic feedback from the delegates and course leaders alike and we will definitely be continuing this venture into the future, it has provided an excellent head start and a firm footing on which to continue their training.
